When Is the Best Time
This hike can be done throughout the year though most beautiful regarding the weather from April to October/November. After heavy rainfall, the gorge Oppig Grät is too muddy and slippery. It may be difficult to cross the stream several times. A great month is May, still, some sunlight in the gorge because the trees haven't developed the entire leaves yet and rare flowers are in bloom.

There are 111 hiking trails in Saarland and Rhineland-Palatinate called "Traumschleifen"; that means a dream of circular hiking trails. This trail is almost 12 km long and takes 3-4 hours. Walk this trail clockwise. It is much up and downhill in elevation more than 400 meters. This trail leads along meadows with scattered fruit trees, to beautiful outlooks like Losheim at the lake, the Donatus chapel, and the highlight is the 1.4 km long gorge. Take your time at this special trail to enjoy the wild and unspoilt nature in the Oppig Grät, which is a local word for gorge. It is a nature protected area and the habitat for rare plants and animals also salamander.
