When Is the Best Time

It's a spectacular and challenging hike in the Ticino close to the Italian border. However, due to the cable car on Monte Tamaro and Monte, it's a perfect day hike with excellent views.  Usually, mid-June until mid-October are the best months of the year for the traverse but check the weather forecast first. It is difficult to hike with ice or too much rain before. The trail can be slippery. In the winter you may need crampons for hiking. Weather forecast Monte Tamaro

The traverse from Monte Tamaro to Monte Lema offers breathtaking views. The trail is 13 km long a 5 hours up and downhill hike. First, you take the cable car to Corte di Sopro. A short walk leads to Alpe Foppa. To start the traverse, hike to the summit of Tamaro (1962 m). Plan some extra time to visit several places of interest. For example, the Chapel Santa Maria Degli Angeli designed by the well-known architect Mario Botta during the '90s is worth a stop.  Have a break at Capanna Tamaro a mountain hut offering meals and beds. It's breathtaking located and perfect for watching the sunset and sunrise the next morning. Afterwards, hike to the top of Monte Magno.

When reaching Monte Lema, you can take the cable car down to Miglieglia. From June to October, there is an evening shuttle bus back to Rivera cable car station. It is well-organized guarantees a perfect day hike. We did this hike already twice and highly recommend this awesome trail.

Packing List for Hiking

  • Carry a rain- and windproof jacket; be prepared for changeable weather in the mountains.
  • Plenty of water; especially on a hot summer day you may sweat a lot
  • Energy food; pretty helpful on this strenuous up and down the trail.
  • Sunscreen and hat; the sun is even stronger in this high elevation, and there isn't any shelter.
  • Hiking poles
